Macedonia Tourism: 741,446 Visitors in Seven Months, with Room to Grow

Macedonia has a lot to offer, but its tourism potential is still greater than the numbers suggest

More than 741,000 tourist arrivals were recorded in Macedonia between January and July 2026. The figure may sound large, but it represents growth of just 1.5% compared with the same period last year. Meanwhile, the number of overnight stays increased by only 0.5%.

These figures offer a useful snapshot of the tourism sector, but they also invite a broader question: how well are we turning the country’s nature, culture and cuisine into travel experiences that encourage visitors to stay longer and return?

According to data from the State Statistical Office, 523,751 of the 741,446 tourist arrivals were international, while 217,695 were domestic. A total of 1,760,335 overnight stays were recorded during the same period. That works out to approximately 2.4 nights per tourist arrival, on average — suggesting there is room to encourage longer stays and visits beyond the country’s main tourist destinations.

It’s not just about how many people visit

The number of tourist arrivals is only one part of the picture. The length of each stay, visitor spending, the places people discover and the reasons they might return all matter to destinations and local businesses.

A visitor spending several days in the country could explore more than one place. Alongside a lake, city or mountain, they might visit a winery, a local restaurant, a walking trail or a small village. For that to happen, the options need to be easy to find, well presented and connected into appealing itineraries.

From familiar destinations to new reasons to travel

Ohrid and the lake are a well-known draw, while Skopje is a natural starting point for a short break. The mountains, wine regions, archaeological sites and rural communities offer opportunities for different kinds of trips. The potential is there. The challenge is making it easy for visitors to discover and plan.

Well-designed weekend itineraries, clear information about transport and opening hours, marked trails and quality local services can help turn a brief visit into a longer stay. Small details matter too: where to eat, what to do after arriving and which nearby places are worth including in the same trip.

Tourism throughout the year

When travel is concentrated in a few popular months and destinations, much of the country remains outside the tourism flow. Spring walks, autumn wine tours, winter mountain weekends and cultural events can give visitors reasons to explore at other times of the year.

This takes collaboration between accommodation providers, guides, restaurants, local producers and activity organisers. Visitors are often looking for more than a place to sleep; they want to know what they can experience there.

Growth is good news, and the next step is clear

A total of 741,446 tourist arrivals in seven months is a solid foundation, but growth of 1.5% and a nearly unchanged number of overnight stays show that there is room to make a bigger leap. The question is not only how to attract more visitors, but how to give them more reasons to stay longer, explore more places and want to return.

Macedonia has landscapes, flavours, history and hospitality that can offer many different kinds of trips. The next step is to bring them together in experiences that are easy to find and remember.
