From Turkish Coffee to Hidden Breweries: Discover Skopje’s Old Bazaar

The team at Kajak.mk couldn't be more thrilled to have had the incredible opportunity to spend time with a group of curious travelers all the way from the USA. This was the first-ever chance for the team to connect with guests so passionate about exploring Macedonian traditions. Their mission was clear: to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and indulge in the rich flavors of Skopje’s gastronomic delights. It was an unforgettable experience, one where the joy of discovery and the warmth of Macedonian hospitality came together in perfect harmony.

These visits and the wonderful groups we have the privilege of hosting truly inspire us to keep pushing forward. They fuel our passion to uncover new local gems, meet talented artisans, and discover chefs who weave their unique stories into the fabric of Skopje’s rich history. Each encounter is a reminder of how the old streets of Skopje are alive with tales that give history a fresh, vibrant meaning. It’s these moments that keep us excited to continue our journey of exploration and sharing the heart of Macedonia with the world.

For those of you who haven't yet had the chance to explore the Old Skopje Bazaar, we’ve got a few hidden corners that you absolutely must visit. Why? Because the stories shared by the artisans here will leave you in awe, offering a glimpse into the soul of this vibrant city.

Let’s begin with the unforgettable story of Uncle Burhan. Tucked near the “Bedesten,” every morning you’re greeted by the irresistible aroma of freshly ground Turkish coffee, skillfully prepared by none other than Uncle Burhan himself. We chose this spot as our first destination not just for the rich, aromatic coffee, but for the unique way he brews each cup, all while sharing tales of Turkish traditions. His passion for the craft and the stories behind each brew make this an experience you won't soon forget.

Every morning, Uncle Burhan grinds Turkish coffee with the utmost care, ensuring that each cup is fresh and full of flavor. Guests are always amazed by the unique way he prepares the coffee—an experience that takes them back in time. The coffee is brewed the traditional Turkish way, with cezves placed on hot sand until it reaches the perfect consistency. It’s then served with a piece of sweet, soft locum and a refreshing glass of water, completing the ritual.

But the delights don’t end with coffee. At Uncle Burhan's, you can also enjoy a refreshing glass of lemonade with mint, soothing Turkish tea, and a variety of delicious sweets that perfectly complement the beverages. It’s not just a coffee stop, it’s a step into the heart of Turkish tradition, where every sip tells a story.

Another hidden gem we highly recommend exploring within the bazaar is the international brewery “An,” nestled right in the heart of Kapan Han. This place holds a special spot in the bazaar’s history and is truly one of its most remarkable treasures. Here, you have the unique opportunity to learn about the rich history of the brewery, meet the passionate people who bring it to life, and, of course, savor some of the most delicious food in the area.

One dish you absolutely cannot miss is the warm bread with pesto, a perfect combination that will have you coming back for more. The flavors, the atmosphere, and the stories behind the brewery make it a must-visit stop for anyone looking to experience Skopje's vibrant culture from a different angle.

We hope these three unique corners we've shared with you inspire you to take a stroll through the Old Skopje Bazaar and immerse yourself in its rich history and hidden treasures. Each spot offers a different taste of Skopje's vibrant culture, and we’re sure you'll be just as captivated as we are. Stay tuned for more tips from us, as we continue to uncover the best that this magical city has to offer. Happy exploring!
