Weekly Discovery from Macedonia: The Springs of the Babuna River
Weekly Discovery from Macedonia: The Springs of the Babuna River
The Springs of the Babuna – the mountain beginning of a river
In the high parts of Mount Jakupica, above the village of Nezilovo, lies the source zone of the Babuna River. This area is defined by the fact that the river does not begin from a single point, but from multiple small natural springs emerging between rocks and dense forest.
The terrain is mountainous, dominated by beech forest, rocky sections, and steep slopes. The water is cold and clear, and in several places it emerges directly from the ground and rock, forming small streams that gradually merge into the main riverbed.
Access to the location
Access to the springs starts from the village of Nezilovo. The path is not a formally developed tourist trail, but a mountain terrain with natural tracks and forest passages.
In some sections, movement is easier due to existing forestry roads, but the final part requires hiking through more demanding mountain terrain. For this reason, the location is usually visited with proper hiking equipment and good knowledge of the area.
Characteristics of the source zone
The source zone of the Babuna lies in an area of high natural preservation. It is characterized by a dense beech forest zone, rocky formations with springs emerging directly from the substrate, small water streams that merge into the main flow, and strong seasonal variation, especially during snowmelt periods.
This part of the river represents one of the least disturbed water systems in the wider region.
Conclusion
The springs of the Babuna are a significant natural point as they represent the beginning of one of the key rivers in central Macedonia in an almost completely natural state. The area has no tourism infrastructure, which helps preserve its authenticity.
