Online Payments in North Macedonia: Changes, Security Updates, and What Users Should Know
Online Payments in North Macedonia: Changes, Security Updates, and What Users Should Know
In recent times, the topic of online payments in North Macedonia has become one of the most discussed. Some citizens noticed an additional step when paying with a card online, which raised questions — whether this involves new costs, restrictions, or a more complicated procedure.
Below is a clear explanation of what exactly changed and why this change is small but important from a security perspective.
What exactly changed in online payments?
According to guidelines from the National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia, banks introduced Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) for online transactions.
In practice, this means that when paying with a card online, in addition to entering your card details, in most cases you will need to:
Enter a one-time SMS code, or
Confirm the payment through a mobile banking application, or
Use another additional security method offered by your bank.
It is important to emphasize:
No new taxes are introduced.
No new fees are added.
Card usage is not restricted.
This is solely an additional security verification step.
Why was this measure introduced?
Online fraud and card misuse are global challenges. With additional authentication:
The risk of unauthorized transactions is reduced
Protection of funds is increased
Trust in digital payments is strengthened
This standard has been applied in European countries for a long time and is part of modern banking practices.
Is online payment in North Macedonia now more complicated?
In reality – no.
The change only adds a few seconds to confirm a transaction. Once users get used to the new step, the process becomes routine.
The usual payment flow looks like this:
You enter your card details.
You receive an SMS code or app notification.
You confirm the transaction.
The payment is successfully completed.
The entire process takes less than one minute.
How does this affect e-commerce?
Online shopping in North Macedonia has been growing in recent years. More citizens are buying products and services online, paying for travel arrangements, digital subscriptions, or ordering from abroad.
With higher security standards, a safer environment is created for both citizens and businesses. In the long term, this means:
Greater trust in online payments
Lower risk of fraud
Stronger development of the domestic digital economy
What should citizens do?
For smooth use of online payments, it is recommended to:
Check if your bank has your correct phone number
Use a mobile banking application if available
Never share SMS codes with others
Pay only on secure and verified websites
If a payment problem occurs, it is usually due to technical or administrative reasons (outdated contact details, expired card, insufficient funds) and can be solved by contacting the bank.
The new online payment rules in North Macedonia represent a small technical change aimed at better security. They do not bring additional costs and do not restrict card usage.
Online payments remain fast, practical, and available at all times. The only difference is one additional step — in favor of protecting your funds.
