Madrid Gets a New Reason to Visit: Formula 1 Returns to the City in 2027

Madrid has brought Formula 1 back after more than four decades, with the inaugural edition of the new MADRING attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. It has now been confirmed that the Spanish Grand Prix will return to Madrid in 2027.

Formula 1 is once again part of Madrid’s tourism story. After a break of more than 45 years, the Spanish capital hosted the race again in September 2026, this time on the brand-new MADRING circuit near IFEMA.

The inaugural race attracted more than 360,000 visitors, including around 45,000 international guests. According to data published by the City of Madrid, the event generated an estimated €467 million in economic impact and supported around 8,850 jobs.

Interest in the race extended well beyond motorsport fans. According to city authorities, searches for accommodation in Madrid during the Grand Prix period increased by 41%, while some hotel chains reached occupancy levels of around 90%.

One particularly interesting figure is the length of visitors’ stays. A significant share of guests did not come to Madrid just for race day. Stays of six to 13 nights accounted for around 39% of total bookings during the race week. This highlights how a major sporting event can encourage visitors to stay longer and explore the destination beyond the event itself.

The new MADRING circuit is approximately 5.4 kilometers long and features 22 corners. It uses a hybrid configuration that combines purpose-built sections with urban segments around the IFEMA area.

One of the most distinctive sections is La Monumental, which stretches for around 550 meters and features a maximum gradient of 24%.

The location is also convenient for international visitors. MADRING is situated in northeastern Madrid, close to IFEMA and Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, with connections to the city’s public transport network.

The first edition also highlighted areas for improvement. Overtaking opportunities were limited in some sections of the circuit, and organizers have already announced changes to three parts of the track ahead of the 2027 race.

Formula 1 has officially confirmed Madrid on the 2027 calendar, with the MADRING race scheduled for 10–12 September 2027.

For travelers, this creates another opportunity to spend an entire weekend in the Spanish capital. A Formula 1 trip can easily be combined with visits to Madrid’s historic center, the Prado and Reina Sofía museums, Retiro Park, local gastronomy and the city’s renowned nightlife.

Formula 1 is therefore becoming more than a sporting event for Madrid. It is also a new tourism product, attracting international visitors, encouraging longer stays and connecting motorsport with culture, gastronomy and the wider city experience.

Madrid now has another reason to be on the European travel map in September — Formula 1 and MADRING.
