Tourism in North Macedonia: Are We Investing Enough in Tourism Professionals?

Tourism in North Macedonia is often mentioned as a strategic opportunity — a chance for economic growth, development of rural areas, and stronger international positioning. We are pleased to see increasing visitor numbers, new accommodation facilities, and growing interest in authentic experiences. But behind all these results lies a more important question: are we investing enough in the people who should strategically lead this process?

Tourism is not just about natural beauty, gastronomy, or cultural heritage. It is a system that requires management, analysis, and long-term vision. In developed tourism countries, destination management is a recognized and structured profession, supported by organizations such as Destinations International, which emphasizes the importance of a professional approach to tourism development. In those markets, growth is not left to chance but is planned through clear strategies, measurable goals, and accountability.

In our case, however, we often witness spontaneous development. A region becomes popular, interest grows, investments follow — but without clear coordination and without a long-term framework. When there is not enough trained workforce to manage the process, we risk creating short-term tourism booms instead of sustainable growth. Infrastructure can be built relatively quickly, but knowledge, expertise, and strategic thinking take years to develop.

Investment in tourism must mean more than buildings and promotional campaigns. It must include education, specialization, digital transformation, and the development of professionals who know how to work with data, build clear positioning strategies, and maintain balance between economic interests and the protection of natural and cultural resources. Without such an approach, potential remains unused and competitiveness remains limited.

If we truly want tourism to become a stable pillar of the economy, we must start treating it as a serious industry that requires professional leadership. North Macedonia has a lot to offer, but the key difference between an average and a successful destination is not in resources, but in management. The question is not whether we have potential, but whether we are ready to systematically invest in the people who know how to turn that potential into long-term value.
