The name Vinica comes from the word WINE, because the Vinica area was historically known for its vineyards. On the terracotta icons found at the Vinica Fortress site, the city’s name is recorded as Vinea or Vince. According to local legend, the name originated during a period of several drought years when, instead of water, houses were built using wine.

Evliya Çelebi, in the second half of the 17th century, noted about this small place: “After traveling four hours through forests and mountains, I arrived at Vinica, a well-known place for its large market of agricultural and livestock products. The place is called Yeni-pazar (New Market).” Because of this large and prosperous weekly market, Vinica was referred to by this name for a long time in Çelebi’s records.

  • Pazarishte, a settlement from Roman times

  • Vinichko Kale, a fortified settlement from the late antiquity period
