Weekend Getaway Suggestion: The Village of Trebeništa

In addition to summer vacations, you probably feel the urge to make the most of the sunny weekends in August by traveling and discovering new destinations in Macedonia.

Today, we’re introducing you to the village of Trebeništa, located in the municipality of Debrca. This village borders Volino, Misleshevo, Gorenci, Livoišta, and Mešeišta. You can easily reach it, as it’s situated right on the road connecting Ohrid and Kičevo, and it lies in close proximity to Struga.


Trebeništa is divided into three neighborhoods: Upper, Middle, and Lower Trebeništa. Nearby is the well-known Trebeništa Necropolis. According to data from Pasko Kuzman’s book "The Art of Trebeništa," the movable collection from the Trebeništa necropolis includes 825 archaeological artifacts. Of these, 258 are housed in the Archaeological Museum in Sofia, 187 in the National Museum in Belgrade, and 380 in the National Museum in Ohrid.

Among the most remarkable items are four golden funeral masks. These masks were used by the ancient inhabitants to symbolize their belief that in the afterlife, they would sit among the gods.

To the southeast above the village rises a tall hill with an elevation of 1,080 meters, marking the end of the Višovska Mountain. The summit is flat, and remnants of fortress walls built from crushed stone and lime mortar can still be seen. These remains reveal several phases of construction and modifications over time. Scattered across the entire area of the settlement are fragments of ceramic vessels, reflecting various historical periods and cultural influences.

Just 1 kilometer from the village lies the Trebenište Lake. It was formed in 1963 as a result of a landslide that blocked the river, creating a large depression which then filled with water, giving birth to the lake. Today, the lake is ideal for fishing and recreational tourism.
